At the heart of the Marine Autonomous Seismic System (MASS) is a miniaturised autonomous 4C sensor capsule. Inspired by the miniaturisation in the mobile phone industry and drawing on the knowledge of the company’s R&D department, Magseis developed the smallest and lightest sensor in the marketplace, which weighs just over 8 kg. The sensor electronics are exceptionally compact and is paired with ultra-low power consumption. The result is a unique combination small size, lightweight and long record time. Magseis first node has recording time of 65 days and with its latest edition, the MASS III node has recording time of up 150days. Magseis’ focus on high-end technology is underlined with 32-bit ADC resolution, chip scale atomic clock and 128 GB flash memory. With a fully programmable CPU, there is a lot of flexibility by activating new functionalities such sleep/awake programming and the recording time can be extended further with features like low-power consumptions. Leading edge sensor technology paired with the weight density of the sensor capsule proves excellent sea floor coupling resulting in top quality 4C data.
The compact size of the sensor capsule allows for handling large numbers of receivers during operations and is specially designed for fully automated handling. With such an ultra-compact unit, there is principally no limit on the number of nodes which can be deployed in any survey. In combination with fully automated handling systems, using robots, the logistics of node management, and time spent deploying and retrieving the equipment is providing increased efficiencies, low failure rates and safer operations.
